Sean had set the picnic out on a blanket he’d brought then put down some cooked chicken and a bowl of water for Zeus. The dog waited for Sean to tell him the chicken was his then he tucked in, making Sean laugh. ‘If only Gwen enjoyed my cooking that much and ate it without hesitation.’

Giselle had come back to them and sat down on the blanket, setting her camera to one side. She removed her hat and her hair tumbled down over her shoulders. Sean wondered how she would look with her hair covering her naked skin and was hit by a sudden yearning to bury his face in her hair. Both thoughts had him looking away pretty sharpish because he had no idea where they had come from.

Giselle expressed her delight at the picnic and they’d eaten from bamboo plates and drunk tea from tin mugs. While eating, they’d chatted about the site and the village and Sean answered some of her questions about the area. He found being with her easy and could imagine being friends with her although a part of him whispered that he would always want more. She was physically beautiful, he couldn’t deny that, but there was something else that drew him to her. She had an inner glow that he wanted to understand and to enjoy. It had been so long since he’d enjoyed the company of a woman other than his sisters and Giselle was growing in appeal by the minute. Plus, they were both single, and she’d told him that she was now at a point in her life where she felt ready to put down roots. So there was a chance that she might decide to stay in Cwtch Cove and then… they could get to know each other better and he could see if Gwen liked her and…

He had slowed his breathing and with it his thoughts and told himself to take it one step at a time. His body was reacting to Giselle and so were his heart and his mind, but he had to get to know her better first. She might not even like him in that way and he had to always, always put Gwen first. Gwen was his priority. Any woman who came into his life had to get on with his daughter and agree to put her first also. It was a lot to ask of any prospective partner and one of the reasons why Sean had shied away from romance for so long.

After they’d packed the picnic away, they’d strolled around the site for a while before heading back down to the village. As much as he’d been looking forward to seeing Gwen, Sean had found that he was reluctant to say goodbye to Giselle and that had been why he’d found himself inviting her and Zeus to dinner the very next day and then been delighted when she’d readily accepted.

Knowing that he’d see her again soon gave him a spring in his step as he walked home.
